OpenAI, the AI research organization, is rolling out a new feature to its AI models, including ChatGPT and Codex, to comply with the European Union's AI Act. The feature, called textGrain, adds an invisible watermark to AI-generated text that can be detected by machine.

The watermark is an opt-in feature for now, and users globally can choose to enable it starting today. Initially, this feature will be accessible to EU residents only.

The EU AI Act mandates AI-generated text contain a machine-readable marker indicating it was generated by AI. OpenAI's textGrain watermark meets this requirement, making it harder for users to pass off AI-generated content as human-written.
